Fall 2008

Ground Zero
REMEMBERING THE SUMMER/FALL OF 2005 - Three short years ago, a mega-corporation land speculator/developer attempted to breach the new North Livermore Urban Growth Boundary and build a housing tract of 2,490 units in the North Livermore Valley. The developer qualified a ballot initiative for the November election, and the battle lines were drawn. Many Friends of Livermore rallied to the cause and participated in the campaign that defeated Measure D. The above photo, taken this year, shows where houses would now be if the ballot measure had passed. Read more about successful efforts over the decades to keep North Livermore Valley from being paved over with houses -- "rooftops from ridgeline to ridgeline."
FRIENDS OF LIVERMORE, following its vision "Protect the Urban Growth Boundary, Prevent Sprawl, Preserve Open Space," spearheaded the effort to defeat Measure D in 2005 and continues its service to Livermore through the following ongoing activities:
Monitoring local, county and state policies and activities that impact land use and open space issues in Livermore;
Serving as an information pipeline to concerned citizens of Livermore;
Speaking out in public forums on relevant issues;
Maintaining a Political Action Committee (PAC), enabling endorsement and active support of ballot measures and candidates for public office who have a demonstrated record of supporting the environment, open space, agriculture, defendable urban growth boundaries, and "smart growth."
