Wal-Mart Supercenter
Background
Wal-Mart submitted a proposal to the city on May 31, 2006 for a 24 hour Supercenter to be located on 20 acres on the southwest corner of Isabel Avenue (Hwy 84) and Jack London Blvd.
FOL Position
This is a monstrosity, plain and simple. It is a scar on Livermore that will glow through the night, every night. This is not the type of night life we envision for Livermore. A 24-hr. commercial megalopolis is utterly inconsistent with the ambiance of quiet dignity that we have grown to value in our home town. It does not serve any compelling need in Livermore. Instead, it brings the certainty of increased traffic and the distinct possibility of increased crime and lowered property values in the adjacent residential areas. And we already have a Wal-Mart.
UPDATE: March 2007 - The Livermore City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting mega-scale retail stores in Livermore. We applaud this action.
